Cathy Darland, branch manager of the St. George Boulevard branch, recently presented a cheque for $1000 to Peter Trainor, vice-principal of Hillcrest Elementary School for the Advance Savings Credit Union Literacy Program. This initiative, which was launched in 2008, involves a financial commitment from Advance Savings of $1000 per school year.
The Program is a literacy based rewards program whereby the students of Hillcrest are encouraged to improve their literacy skills, no matter what level they are presently at, in such things as reading, writing, poetry, acting, etc. During the monthly awards assemblies, Cathy Darland presents books to one student from each of the school’s 13 classes. The recipients of the books are chosen by the teachers. Each student is also given a book for their class, so as to increase their supply of new reading material.
